Diaper Bags: How to Find the Right Bag for Your Needs

Welcoming a new baby into the family is both exciting and life changing. Amidst all of the excitement, it’s easy to forget about little essential things, like how you plan on lugging around all of your baby’s things when you leave the house. While you may be able to use your oversized purse to carry around some items, a diaper bag is the best option.
The Advantages of Using a Diaper Bag
Diaper bags are designed to carry all of your baby’s essential items. They’re spacious and often come with multiple compartments and pockets to keep your items organized. If you need to carry around formula and bottles, a diaper bag’s large pockets can prevent spills and protect other items in your bag.
Diaper bags are also a more convenient option. There’s no getting around the fact that you will need some sort of bag to carry your baby’s items in. In the very least, you should bring a change of clothes, extra diapers and wipes when you’re on the go. Diaper bags have pockets and compartments designed to neatly store all of these items so you don’t have to waste your time fighting to make space in a regular purse.
Most moms also enjoy the fact that they can also use the bag as a purse. Most bags come with enough storage space to also hold your keys, cell phone, wallet and any other essential items that you may need. Rather than lugging around two oversized bags, you only need one simple bag to carry everything you need for both you and your baby.
Features to Look For in a Diaper Bag
Although many modern diaper bags resemble designer purses, the shopping process isn’t quite the same. There are some important features that you should be on the lookout for.

  • Durability and comfort: As a busy mom (or dad), the last thing you want to deal with is carrying around an uncomfortable bag. Look for bags with wide and padded straps. Durability is also incredibly important, especially if you need to carry formula and bottles. When a bag is well-constructed, it can better handle the weight of bottles, diapers, clothing and all of the other items that you need to carry around. As a general rule, you also want to opt for bags that use zippers rather than a Velcro flap or buttons. This will prevent your items from falling out.
  • Handle length: The bag’s handles should be short enough so that you can easily carry it like a briefcase, but long enough that you can easily throw it over your shoulder. Some bags come equipped with two sets of handles, one longer and one shorter, for added convenience.
  • Changing pad: Typically, diaper bags come with a foldable changing pad that fits right into the bag itself. The pad is usually constructed with material that is easy to wipe clean and is placed in its own separate compartment. This is ideal as it prevents the pad from contaminating other items in the bag.
  • Material: While there are a wide range of different material options for diaper bags today, opting for a bag constructed with water-resistant nylon or microfiber is the more practical choice.
